Fungi workshop

16/10/2020

A one-day identification course aimed at beginners who want to learn more about fungi in a fun and informal way. Course leader, Bryan Bullen, will share his knowledge of these important and diverse organisms and their different habitats, and he will show you how to identify the main groups of British fungi. The morning will be spent in the classroom covering various aspects of the subject and will include specimen examination and a slide presentation; in the afternoon Bryan will lead a walk in the Pinetum to find and identify some of Bedgebury’s special fungi. The course will NOT involve identifying or picking edible specimens, and there is a strict no picking policy at Bedgebury. The workshop is intended to share an understanding of the place of fungi in an ecological context, rather than in the human food chain.

The workshop will start at 10.00am and conclude at 3.30pm, with 30 minutes for lunch. A sandwich lunch will be provided. Teas and coffees will be provided during the classroom session.

By the end of the session participants will:

  • Understand the importance of identifying different species of fungi.
  • Know how to identify the habitats of fungi.
  • Be aware of the risks and hazards associated with fungi identification, and the precautions it is necessary to take.
  • Know how to identify different species of fungi using keys and other sources of reference.
  • Know where to find sources of information and advice.
