Operational volunteers are those who work in the Pinetum, helping to maintain it in all manner of ways. There are operational activities every Wednesday (from 9.30 am) and every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month (from 10.00 am) for you to get involved with, including:

The Wednesday Wild Crew IMG 0624 Large

If you have a few hours to spare, why not join the Forestry Commission at 9.30am on a Wednesday morning and spend time in the fresh air, with good company, making the Pinetum look beautiful. You will be provided with gloves, tools and guidance (as well as tea and coffee of course!). It’s a chance to learn about the trees in the collection, the wildlife on site and the practicalities of managing such a site. Plus, there is always that feeling of satisfaction after you have cleared, tidied, mulched and planted for a morning.

The Sunday Working Group

Traditionally, this group has undertaken heavy-duty work such as scrub clearance and coppicing, with large bonfires a feature of the session! This type of work typically takes place in winter. During spring and summer, Sunday sessions consist of a more comprehensive work programme, much like the Wednesday group (see above), that benefits the wonderful grassland and heathland, as well as the trees at Bedgebury. Sunday volunteering takes place on every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 10.00am.
