Operational volunteers are those who work in the Pinetum, helping to maintain it in all manner of ways. There are operational activities every Wednesday (from 9.30 am) and every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month (from 10.00 am) for you to get involved with, including:
The Wednesday Wild Crew
If you have a few hours to spare, why not join us at 9.30am on a Wednesday morning and spend time in the fresh air, with good company, making the Pinetum look beautiful. You will be provided with gloves, tools and guidance (as well as tea and coffee of course). It’s a chance to learn about the trees in the collection, wildlife on site and practicalities of managing such a site. Plus, there is always that feeling of satisfaction after you have cleared, tidied, mulched and planted for a morning.
The Sunday Working Group
Traditionally, this group has undertaken heavy-duty work such as scrub clearance, coppicing and having large bonfires! While this type of work will still be a feature on Sundays during the winter, wherever we can, work will now have a conservation aspect. During spring and summer, Sundays will consist of a more comprehensive work programme, much like Wednesdays (see above), that will hopefully benefit the wonderful grassland and heathland to be found at Bedgebury. Sunday volunteering takes place on every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month, at 10.00am.
