Giant redwood (Wellingtonia) - Sequoiadendron giganteum
One of three redwoods (the others are the coast redwood and the dawn redwood), it can live for a few thousand years and is native to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. The giant redwood is one of the oldest living things on Earth – with the oldest known individual about 3,500 years old based on ring count. It can grow to about 85m tall (with the record holder at 94.8m).
At the Pinetum, a grove of the species can be found at the end of the former boardwalk.
This tree is on the list for seed collection during the next expedition to California.
