Montezuma Pine - Pinus montezumae
Native to Central and South America the Montezuma pine is rarely seen in the UK. It can grow up to 35m in height and has long frond-like needles and a hard wood that is used for construction.
Known locally as ocote, it is widely grown commercially. Its resin is very flammable and the wood is often used in its native Mexico as a fire starter for campfires and barbecues.
The young trees at Bedgebury are from cuttings of the extremely well-established tree at Sheffield Park. It is one of the most beautiful pine species with its long blue/green needles which can grow up to 30cms long.
