I was sent this image by a gentleman whom had found this young hobby on a forest path. Unfortunately, it was probably too early for it to be out of the nest but it did go to prove that this species did indeed breed at Bedgebury in 2015.

Still no Hawfinch in the usual area but it was nice to see several several Siskin and Brambling (pictured) coming in to roost. As well as small groups of Redwing and Fieldfare, there has also been a small flock of Starlings - an unusual bird for the Pinetum.

Much more Redwing, Fieldfare and general thrush activity at the moment. Goldcrest seem very numerous and Crossbill are being heard or seen weekly. There was also a report of an albino Grey Squirrel in the forest!

There was a lot of bird activity at Bedgebury today, including Siskin, Bullfinch, Goldcrest, Crossbill, Raven, Sparrowhawk and a pale looking Common Buzzard.

Recent bird sightings include small numbers of Redwing and Fieldfare, one Grey Wagtail, several Buzzards and a pair of Kestrels.

Bird noted in the Pinetum of late include Little Egret, Buzzard, Raven, Bullfinch and the first group of Crossbills for some time.

A Kingfisher was seen close to Marshal's Lake again and a juvenile Little Grebe was seen on the Visitor Centre Lake (thanks to Ann for these sightings).

One of the Visitor Services team photographed a large female Grass Snake a few days ago. Juvenile Buzzards, Kestrels and Carrion Crows still very active around the site, as are the invertebrates, including Brown Hawkers, Essex Skippers and Fritillaries.

A Kingfisher was seen on Marshal's Lake in the evening - an uncommon visitor to the Pinetum. Juvenile Kestrels were hunting and a fairly large group of Mistle thrushes were seen.

Late yesterday afternoon, our Dendrologist reported two STORKS flying over the forest and Pinetum, heading north east. Many stoats have been seen around the Pinetum too recently.

A sub-adult Kestrel caught a worm right in front of us yesterday evening, along with Spotted Flycatcher, Bullfinch, Siskin, House Martin, Swallow and Sparrowhawk seen elsewhere in the Pinetum.

A Nightjar was flushed in the forest yesterday and a single Crossbill was heard. Three White Admirals and a Fritillary sp were spotted by one of our operations team.

Golden-ringed Dragonfly (pictured) and White Admiral Butterfly have finally been spotted! Birds of note include a Garden Warbler (from the forest), Swifts, Sparrowhawk, Blackcap, Bullfinch and Siskin

Most Dragonfly and Damselfly species, except for Golden-ringed, have been so far this year. Fritillaries have been seen, mostly likely Dark Green. Also, this Common toad was found during a volunteering session on Sunday.

One of our notable invertebrates, the Long-horned Mining Bee (Eucera longicornis), was seen at the Dam by the Visitor Centre on Friday.

Avian highlights from Friday's Wildlife Walk for Sevenoaks birding group included a Treecreeper family, a few Spotted Flycatchers, House Martins, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Willow Warbler, Blackcap, Goldcrest, Buzzard, a Little Grebe family, Whitethroat, Reed Buntings at the nest and a Firecrest feeding young. Other highlights included Brilliant Emerald Dragonflies, a Painted Lady Butterfly, Bee Orchids and Euphrasia anglica.

Today, our Dendrologist reported a Red Kite from the Pinetum and one of our visitors sent us this photo of a female Grass Snake sunning itself in the Pinetum.

Both male and female Cuckoo heard and seen yesterday in the forest.

There would appear to be quite a few Nightjar at the moment, with a pair even turning up in the Pinetum. Other birds heard include Turtle Dove, Cuckoo and Woodcock.

Some of the highlights from the weekend's wildlife walk included:

  • Birds: Firecrest, Goldcrest, Whitethroat, Willow Warbler, Buzzard, Kestrel and House Martin.
  • Wildflowers that were specifically looked at: Broad-leaved Helleborine, Common-spotted Orchid, Common Twayblade, Bee Orchid, Lousewort, Milkwort, Bugle, Germander Speedwell, Heath Speedwell, Birds-foot Trefoil, Red Clover, Yellow Pimpernel, Tormentil, Wild Strawberry, Heath Bedstraw, Silverweed, Dyer's Greenweed, Common Vetch, Ribwort Plantain, Common Mouse-ear and Comfrey.
  • Invertebrates: Downy Emerald (pictured), Common Blue Damselfly, Speckled Wood and Cinnabar Moth.

Downy and Brilliant Emerald out , along with some of the commoner damselflies, near to Marshal's lake. Kestrels and House Martins very active too. Broad-leaved Helleborine just emerging and Common-spotted and Bee Orchid are about to flower.

In the forest tonight, 2 to 3 Nightjars and several Woodcock. A Turtle Dove was 'purring' in the middle of the Pinetum mid-afternoon.

A Green Hairstreak was seen on the dam this morning, along with the soundtrack of Willow Warblers in the background. Last night, a Woodcock was seen Rhoding at the Flimwell end of the forest.

A welcome report of Turtle Doves back in a traditional spot on the periphery of the forest this week. Firecrest, Buzzard, Kestrel, Common Redpoll, Raven, Marsh Tit, Willow Warbler and Blackcap are some of the more notable birds of late. Quite a few wildflower species are flowering now, including Bugle Ajuga reptans (pictured).

The first Swallows of the year were seen today. Several Blackcaps were heard and seen.

A Red Kite was reported at the start of the month. Today, a few Willow Warblers and lots of Goldcrests were heard singing around the site and many invertebrates were seen, including this very active Green Tiger Beetle.

In the evening, whilst watching Common Newts at a pond in the forest, this enormous male Great Diving Beetle Dytiscus marginalia made his presence known by making the newts scatter.

Kestrels are very active around the Pinetum at the moment as they prepare to nest. The first Firecrest of the year was heard this weekend, along with many Goldcrests. A couple of Six-spot Ladybirds and a Brimstone butterfly were also seen.

At least two Hawfinch seen today (digi-scoped image below), along with Buzzard, Redpoll and Tawny Owl. A Blackcap was reported from the forest last week.

Thanks to Gavin for the following: Five Buzzards and 15 Mandarin Duck over forest early morning. Approximately 30 Redpoll near the plots, with Marsh Tit and two Ravens (pictured). Finally, and the highlight, a count of seven Hawfinch in the Pinetum.

Ravens have been a fairly common sight at Bedgebury of late. Of note, four Hawfinches were seen again, as well as species such as Bullfinch, Siskin and Redpoll. Up to 50 Pied Wagtails can be seen circling the visitor lake at dusk.

3 (maybe 4) Hawfinch going into roost (included at least 1 ringed bird), Bullfinch, Marsh Tit, Brambling, Redpoll (1, maybe 2), Raven making themselves known around the site and a Little Owl near Bedgebury Cross.
