Bedgebury's birds

birdleafletAlthough there is all year round bird interest, it's the arrival of the winter migrants that attracts most attention with the hawfinch, our largest finch, being the star attraction. However, crossbill, brambling and less redpoll are also regular winter visitors. Walks in the forest area can be rewarding with roding woodcock and churring nightjars in summer. In both forest and Pinetum, all three woodpecker species can be found, as well as a range of tits and warblers and several birds of prey. Click here for a printer friendly pdf guide to some of Bedgebury's wonderful bird population.

In winter, a bird ringing programme exists at the Forestry Commission Area Office which small groups are welcome to observe. Click here to read an article in The Guardian by Alex Preston about his bird ringing experience at Bedgebury.

Birds seen:

The list is divided into birds which one might normally expect to see in a typical year and those, described as accidentals/rarities, which are seldom seen.

  • The area covered by the list is the whole of Bedgebury including the forest and the Pinetum and all other peripheral and privately-owned land

  • Any queries or comments on the list should be directed by email to

  • Abbreviations in the main list are purposely kept as simple as possible. SV is summer visitor; WV is winter visitor; all other birds in that first list are considered as resident in the region. Any species labelled Rr is now considered rare at Bedgebury
